Stuffed Toys

Just as many small children have a favorite soft toy they take everywhere, some animals like to have stuffed toys to play with. Female animals, and especially those who have had a litter of babies, may adopt one as their baby. They may carry it around with them, licking it as though grooming a baby or even sucking on it. Other animals will treat it as they do their other toys, batting it around, throwing it in the air and catching it, and chewing on it. A dog might try to chew a hole in it, then pull all the stuffing out of it.

A cat might spend hours pushing it around with their paws, then running after and pouncing on the toy. Especially in this last case, there are distinct advantages to stuffed toys. Harder toys can damage furniture, walls, or doors; if a pet sends a rawhide chew toy skidding across your hardwood floor, it could very well end up scratched. Nylon toys, though durable and good for chewing, can break thin furniture or other objects on the floor if knocked into them. Any of these will be unpleasant if they hit your shin or toes. Stuffed toys are also better for those who want to play tug of war with their pet, as they are easier to grip. They are also readily available, even stocked in some grocery stores, so it is easy to pick one up for your pet. You can even given them old children’s stuffed animals, as long as the children do not mind.
